Microchip
The Madison Animal Hospital recommends every dog and cat be microchipped. Of the 10 million pets that get lost each year, only 17% of the dogs and 2% of the cats are ever recovered. It’s a simple procedure that only takes a few seconds. It’s similar to a vaccination, except we insert a chip the size of a grain of rice under the pet’s skin between the shoulder blades. There’s no need for anesthesia. Microchips are good for the life of your dog or cat. The cost of the procedure includes enrollment in the HomeAgain Pet Recovery Service. HomeAgain maintains a national database and is available 24-hours daily, 365 days a year. When a lost pet is found, it can be scanned at an animal shelter or veterinary clinic and the identification number can be called into HomeAgain or looked up online (see links).
